WHAT YOU SHOULD DO DURING AN ORTHODONTIC EMERGENCY

Most orthodontic problems are not medical emergencies and can be taken care of with one of these simple and quick remedies. Please call our office the next business morning so a follow-up care visit can be scheduled at your convenience. If you are experiencing a true medical emergency such as trauma, obstructed airway, allergic reaction or infection, call 911 or visit the nearest hospital Emergency Room immediately.

When in doubt, call our office, or fill in the provided eform to book an appointment at your earliest convenience.

Sharp Wire
Place wax on wire.
Long Poking Wire
Tuck wire in with the end of a pencil eraser, or clip the wire with a nail clipper. Call office the next day.
Irritating Bracket
Place wax on bracket.
Loose Brace
If brace is securely attached to wire, then leave in place. If brace is not securely attached to wire, then carefully remove brace. Call office the next day.
Loose Elastic Tightener
Carefully remove elastic from mouth.
Loose Wire
If wire is secure, then leave in place. If wire is not secure, then carefully remove wire.
Tooth Discomfort

Take an over-the-counter pain reliever (Tylenol®, Ibuprofen) per the container’s instruction. Carefully chew Trident gum.

Open Sore / Ulcer

Warm water rinse. Call office the next day for treatment.

Broken Appliance (retainer, headgear, Bionator)

Call office for repair or replacement.

Loose Appliance (retainer, headgear, Bionator)

Call office for tightening.

Lost Appliance (retainer, headgear, Bionator)

Call office for replacement.
